The Benefits of Online Learning

The Benefits of Online Learning

I
n the current age of technological advancement, remote working and social distancing, online learning is becoming more and more prevalent. E-learning is a learning system based on formalised teaching but with the help of electronic resources such as computers, laptops, tablets, and more. While concerns about faulty internet and WiFi connections are valid as are worries about social isolation and lack of interaction, there are several benefits to E-Learning which illustrate its utility.

1. More retention and engagement

According to recent data published by the Research Institute of America, E-learning increases students’ retention by25-60% compared to learning in physical classrooms. The reason for this is simple: students have more control over the learning process
and can revisit lessons whenever suits them.

2. Corporations prefer e-learning to train employees

Typically in the past corporations have trained new employees in-person in the workplace or office environment. However, designing and constantly updating content for physical classes takes valuable time out of the working day. On the other hand, E-learning
requires 40-60% less time to design, use, and can be easily edited whenever updates are required, according to a Brandon-Hall study . Employees can learn individually in their own spare time at home, thereby ensuring that work hours are not disrupted.
E-learning is also scalable in that companies can roll it out to as many employees as they wish.

3. Flexibility

E-learning has made education much more accessible and adaptable. You can learn a skill online by taking few minutes of the video course each day, even when you have a day job. You no longer have to take a day off to attend tertiary education or any other
class or lecture. Ultimately, it is up to you to choose when, where, and how you learn.

4. Professionals can learn easily

Long before now, professionals have to attend and pass university classes to reach their academic potential. However, work commitments often overlap with academic assignments or the other way round. Consequently, the quality of work for one if not both
avenues may suffer. Conversely, with E-learning, professionals can continue their academic education and work training simultaneously. As a result, E-learning can have a directly positive effect on boosting employee morale, satisfaction, and longevity.

5. E-learning is cost-effective

E-learning means that companies and corporations no longer have to spend substantial amounts on travel and accommodation costs for learners and instructors/teachers. They also do not have to pay for venue bookings or printed materials, thus reducing their
carbon footprint. Finally, as E-learning is a one-time investment, the more learners that are trained online using the course, the more cost-effective it becomes.

As you can see, E-learning has many advantages which arguably outweigh the drawbacks. It is consequently not surprising that e-learning is becoming the most popular means of training new employees in the corporate world and increasingly in the charity
sector.
